The Karacoma Interview.
I am here chatting with Mawi and suprisingly gave this interview to fill up my time. Hahaha.
Ok, first of all how did Karacoma started, who is/was the band members and why did you guys chose to use Karacoma ? As always thats such a sensitive question how did coma start? ok i have to honest here i started out as a side project as a get away from someone in senjakala so i could write songs without stress and pressure .. more creative freedom .. i got back from singapore after being so pissed with the session there because someone didnt book studio time so i went there wasting my bloody time and money .. so first thing i did was jam new songs with jaz ( an old friend of mine) and adi . the songs were born out of my anger towards someone in senjakala .. those songs became paranoia and fallen angel when sam joined karacoma because of the same reason as mine i guess .. and there is another song that is unused that came from the same session it got a little death metal vibe with the blast beat tapi inda pakai because now we have too many songs haha when sam joined she got several songs that she threw to us like impure thoughts, let me breathe, december snow, sinful bliss, threshold of pain and then we just put together ..
.. lastly i walk out of the senjakala cause i cant stand it any longer .. you dont play your guitar solos all over the song that im trying to teach and many more factors which i rather keep for myself ... so now we are no longer on talking terms .. he is a good friend but i cant just work with him ... im sorry to say that
so from side project and once the lineup was full stable it become like senjakala with new lead guitarist thats what several people said .. and if you ask different members of the band they will give you a different answer but for its just a continuation of work from the previous band but some of the songs wouldnt have been born without my anger towards him hahaha someone once said if im so pissed towards him then why didnt i just kick him out? well i didnt out of respect that he spent some amount of money on recording in singapore .. so yeah i could have call it senjakala but i did not.. well it is what it is .. ei? even jaz ever session for senjakala for a few session and even wayne was in the previous band jua .. btw? senjakala was formed in 1999 haha how long has it been? next year would be 10 years if the band was still together .. i would do senja again but with the current coma lineup and i would and could if everyone agree but i know some would say no .. im sorry to say that .. we still play the old senja songs since we wrote it and rather than it being forgotten ..
current band coma members are sam- vocalist, me- guitarist , adi- drums, jaz- lead guitars, wayne- bass
how did the name karacoma came about? eerrr?? i saw on my msn someone with that email in 2002 so i always thought i would be a nice name for a band so when this project started i asked her permission and so thats how it is ... thanks nico ...
Where were your first gig ? Did you guys were accepted by the crowd ? first gig was kinda alright .. it was in the afternoon and we havent sleep the whole night .. we are known for being nocturnal especially on weekends haha.. so yeah it was fatigue of staying up all night and we havent really gel together with the new songs .. 1st gig was panaga .. the crowd i dont know .. maybe confuse .. it took a few gigs for us to get our act together then its been alright ever since
Who usualy wrote and make the music for the songs? and can I ask what Paranoia is about ? writing music i think is a collabrative effort between us .. sometimes sam would have vocal melody with basic guitar chords then she throw it to the band and we would put it together .. or sometimes i have some riffs then i would put it together with adi then we throw it to sam for her to write lyrics and vocal melody .. paranoia? you have to ask sam cause she wrote the lyrics .. well you can hear the lyrics so its up to your intepretation ..
Where did you guys recorded some of your demos ? before we would record the basic guitar and bass tracks at home then the vocals and drums at our friend studio but now we record everything at home except keyboard and then we pay someone to do the mixing some place else ..
I love listening to you guys, mainly it's because most the songs you guys play reminds me of 'old school' bands and makes me wana move my body. Is your infulences are form old bands such as Metallica and Black Sabbath ? If you ask each one of us if our influences it would be all different .. since you are interviewing me so i guess what i listen to are my influences and they range mostly old school metal to old school death metal like for example WASP, Iron Maiden , Helloween , Mercyful fate, King Diamond, Manowar , Judas Priest , Slayer , Megadeth, Testament, kreator, tiamat, Amorphis, Paradise Lost,Destruction, In Flames (jester race/whoracle era), Sentenced (that album amok is a big riff influence for me), Therion (lepaca kliffort/theli album), Sepultura (beneath the remains/arise era), katatonia, Nagflar (vittra album) , moonspell (under the moonspell/wolfheart) and so many more .. haha of course who could avoid from Metallica and black sabbath .. i was never a big Anthrax fan anyway too cartoonish for me with their Not Man mascot haha.. but yeah i love old school death metal Morbid Angel first 2 album Altars of madness and blessed are the sick .. Carcass (mike amott era) their album necrotism and heartwork ... Obituary - Cause of Death is my favourite with james murphy playing the solos for that album .. At the gates - slaughter of souls album ... there are too many to mention .. i could write a book about my riff influence .. so yeah jaz influence you have to ask him .. so yeah sam got different influence as well .. so if put it all together it give the coma its current sound
but when we write songs we dont plan what are gonna sound like .. For me songwriting is an expression .. so yeah if i write is out of how i feel ..
What inspire you guys to keep on going as a band ? Well i cant say because of money haha because there are no money to be made here in brunei .. rugi duit ada lah.. so yeah i think its because for the love of music .. so yeah
I love drum, and Adi drumming is so good, what is his Idols ? hahaha. Adi is a very versatile drummer .. he live playing drums i guess .. well here are his influence i guess neil peart (rush), Mark Portnoy (dream theater) , Dave Weckl , Chris Adler( lamb of god) .. i think you have to ask him if you wanna find out more about his drum playing
Whens the album comming out ? The album is still in the making so i cant really answer that question but i can give you some details of the upcoming album .. 11 songs ... thats it .. dropby to our place then maybe we can give you a preview of the songs .. here are some of the songtitle Inferno Conspiracy (still working title), Threshold of Pain, Emphaty of Sorrow, Fallen Angel, December Snow, Anthem for the Broken Heart, Bittersweet ..
Do we will expect any gig coming ? I wish gig is easy as they come here in brunei .. so yeah gig is not up to us .. a couple years ago gigs would be once or twice a month but now gigs in brunei is almost non existence in a month .. so yeah we keep ourselves busy with recording and writing .. at least it give a purpose to play in a band ...
Last question do you got any website ? website website haha use to have one .. we ll build one again soon thats official .. but for now its www.myspace.com/karacomarocks .. sorry we havent update that as well
Last words for your die-hard-fans and viewers ? Thank you to all who believe in us from the early days till now from senja to coma .. so i know some people have been waiting for the full album from the senja days but its been so many years that its still not out .. we are working on it with coma so you wont have to wait for so many years anymore .. lets just say if senja had a new album out well this is it .. its a continuation of work .. and i once meet someone that say hei i like senja better than coma .. i bet she doesnt know anything so i said hei whats the difference? the only difference is we got a new lead guitarist which play better solos .. all the old lead guitarist can do is complain saja dari dulu and talk about himself so it doesnt make a difference if we got another lead guitarist in .. the only difference now is the guitar solos are better .. ok? get it? its still the same creative team me,sam and adi .. and the old lead guitarist doesnt even write the main songs so if we had a different lead guitarist dulu the songs would still be there except for different solos .. yeah sorry some of the songs like 6 feet under we play live wont be able to make it on this album but maybe on the next one and i have yet to change the riffs to the chorus of a song called trapped like a butterfly because i dont want that person to get songwriting credit ... i gave that song on the day before he and adi went to singapore to do some recording and i couldnt come up with a chorus so he came up with riffs for chorus.. if i had enough time he knows i could come up with something better than his ... thank you very much and goodnite .. enjoy reading
